A colon is used to introduce an item or a series of items. In this case, Oliv could have written the phrase words to say when you wake up with a headache and you are handcuffed to an itchy chair. This phrase would then have a colon at the end of it, and then she could have listed a number of four-letter words. Merry would not have been one of those words following the colon, and not just because it had more than four letters.
